Felix Mendelssohn founded the Gewandhaus Orchester in 1850 in celebration of Bach and Wagner, and Goethe used the city as a setting for a scene in Faust. It is a booming classy town filled with the energy and vitality of its 20,000 students. |

Innenstadt –The heart of Leipzig is the Markplatz, a cobble-stoned square in front of the 16th century Altes Rathaus with its elegant clock tower.
Auerbachs Keller –It was in this 16th century tavern that Goethe staged the scene from Faust where Mephisto disappears in a puff of smoke after tricking the drunkards.
Thomaskirche – Bach spent his last 27 years at the church that lays just a short way from the Keller, where Goethe staged a scene from Faust.
Museum der “Runden Ecke” – This museum presents a stark display on the history and doctrine of the secret police, including mounds of paperwork on suspected resistors.
Johan-Sebastian Bach Museum – The museum records the period Bach lived in Leipzig (1723 to 1750), when he wrote the St John Passion and Mass in H minor.
